The Washington County Historical Society is excited to announce their Fall Membership Dinner Meeting featuring a program by Jim Lammers on his book “Barns of the St. Croix Valley: An Architect’s Sketchbook.” The event is on Thursday, September 26 at 5:30pm at the Stillwater Event Center, located at 1910 Greeley Street South, Stillwater, MN 55082. Books will be available for purchase at the event.
The event is open to the public and the cost is $25 for WCHS members and $30 for nonmembers. The evening will begin at 5:30pm with a social hour, dinner catered by Scheel’s Catering at 6:30pm and a short update on Society activities at 7:30pm. The program will start shortly after 7:30pm. The program will be available in-person only.

Informatively illustrated with 200 barn sketches, diagrams, and maps, “Barns of the St Croix Valley: An Architect’s Sketchbook” is a visual journey showcasing the many and varied barns to be found throughout the Wisconsin/Minnesota St Croix River Valley. Architect Jim Lammers grounds you in the geography, geology and biology of the region and introduces you to its original inhabitants, the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples, European explorers, fur traders and loggers and the settlers that followed them. It is a celebration of regional diversity and architectural expression through a single type of building -- the barn.
Jim Lammers was educated as an architect back when freehand sketching was an integral part of the curriculum. He holds degrees in architecture from Columbia University and Iowa State University. In addition to his private practice, Jim taught at the University of Minnesota for 18 years and also guest lectured at Iowa State for a few years. He currently teaches travel sketching at Marine Mills Folk Art School in Marine on St Croix, Minnesota.
An inveterate world traveler, persistent writer and relentless sketcher, Jim has been published in a number of professional journals and on websites. His drawings have been exhibited at Landmark Center, Hallburg Center for the Arts, Phipps Art Center, and ArtReach St. Croix.
