Race, Racism, and Belonging in the Stillwater Community, Presented by Dorothy Bliss.
Recent events have highlighted the impact of America's racially charged culture on the well-being of Black Americans and other marginalized peoples in our communities. Discussions of race and racism can be very difficult, especially for white people who are unaccustomed or uncomfortable with these conversations.
Dorothy Bliss will introduce us to the frame of "belonging" as a way to structure conversations about race, racism, and other challenging issues in Stillwater. Using her background in public health, Dorothy will share data and pose questions to help us identify what “belonging” means in our own community, and to start asking what we can do to create change.
OPEN to all Chamber and community businesses to attend!
Please RSVP and we will send you the LINK prior to start time.Dorothy Bliss has over 25 years' experience in the field of public health. She recently retired from her position as a senior planner, research analyst, and writer in the Community Health division of the Minnesota Department of Health.
Dorothy was the primary author and coordinator for the 2017 Minnesota Statewide Health Assessment and the Healthy Minnesota 2022: Statewide Health Improvement Framework, work done in collaboration with the Healthy Minnesota Partnership, a statewide partnership of leaders from a wide range of organizations. Dorothy helped develop and co-led training sessions on using narrative to advance health equity and gives presentations on health equity to a wide range of audiences. Dorothy has a master's degree in sociology from the University of Minnesota and a master's degree in systematic theology from St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota.
