Winter Jackets Adult Reading Program
The Winter Jackets program is to encourage wintertime reading by adults. The program runs through February 28, at all public libraries in Washington County. Read a book, write a review, submit an entry for our February 28 prize drawing.
The Shimmering Blue Line, a new book about the St. Croix River, will be the focus on Saturday, February 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It melds paintings by artist James Wilcox Dimmers with essays by Don Mitchell. Also included is a CD of Don Mitchell’s music, inspired by the river and performed by Don and a group of fine musicians. Jim and Don will discuss their book and the countless hours that they spent listening to the river’s voice and watching the glint of light on water. Books will be for available for sale and will be signed by the creators.
James Wilcox Dimmers has lived in the St. Croix Valley for decades, first in Marine and now in Osceola. He may have traded his sketchbook for a digital camera, but he still haunts the river looking for the scenes that he will paint later in his studio. Don Mitchell lives in Scandia in a house perched 80 feet above the river. He has been a teacher, a technical writer, and a maple sugar farmer. His violin has delighted people up and down the river for years.
