February 14, 2017. Stillwater, MN. The Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce celebrated the milestone 40- year anniversary of River Market Community Co-op on February 14. Team members, founders, elected officials and Chamber Ambassadors attended the celebration.
River Market Community Co-op has humble beginnings. In 1978, a group of 50 residents wanted a local resource to buy bulk foods. Together, they launched Valley Co-op in the basement of a building on Second Street and ran it with all volunteers and about 100 members. They hired their first paid employee a year later. In 1981 they moved to North William Street where they expanded their offerings and paved the way for continued growth. They moved to Main Street in 2000 and rebranded to River Market Community Co-op and 14 years later did a $1 million remodel. Today, River Market Community Co-op boasts $7+ million in revenue annually and serves the needs of over 5,200 members/owners in the community.
Giving back to the community, River Market Community Co-op has adopted a stretch of Highway 95 just north of downtown. They also work closely with many local non-profit organizations including Valley Outreach, Our Community Kitchen, Family Means, the St. Croix River Association and others.
River Market is open every day from 8 am – 9 pm.
